Elements of Ceramics
Class of 2021
Before elements of ceramics, I had never touched clay before. Throughout the semester I learned so many new skills and have become obsessed with clay. I really enjoy watching my progress from the beginning of the semester to the end.
For my art show, I threw a set of functional serving bowls. Once leather hard, I trimmed them, but I purposely left the bottom thicker so I could add texture. I took a trimming tool to carve and create a texture on the bottom half of the bowl. I repeated this for my other bowls and fired them. Once fired, I worked on my glazing. For the texture part I hand painted on a light blue. For the remainder of the bowl, I brushed on a white glaze to create contrast against the blues and yellows.
The second part of my art show was my serving spoons. I rolled out slabs and molded them into plastic spoons. Once somewhat dry, I smoothed them out to be fired. Once they were fired I glazed them all white and fired them on stilts. I used natural sticks to create handles by using a food safe glue, and twine to create a mixed media piece.
Next year I am planning to take advanced ceramics in the spring. I am really excited to continue working with clay, and experimenting even more techniques. I think it will be a great experience as I grow as an artist.
